JUGGLING AT ALTITUDE: THE FINE ART OF SOUNDING GREAT ON THE PICCOLO WHILE STILL HAVING ENOUGH TIME TO SOUND GREAT ON THE FLUTE with RACHEL BRAUDE, Lecturer in Flute at Northeastern University
Houston Hall, 1st Floor

Piccolo-lovers and piccolo-curious flutists of all levels and ages are welcome to join in a lively conversation exploring the specific challenges, and unique joys, of playing the piccolo.  Whether you are interested in staying in shape, getting back in shape, or just getting started, this conversation is for you!  We will begin by exploring the inherent physical differences in the construction of flutes vs. piccolos and what this means for us as players. We will then turn our attention to the skills you should always practice on the piccolo and the skills you don’t need to practice at all!  Yes, really!  Along the way, we’ll explore how to switch between piccolo and flute in and out of the practice room, how to prepare to play a big solo cold (hello Tchaik 4), and how to adapt all of these issues from beginner to expert. Join busy freelancer, Rachel Braude, who will lead the conversation while serving as a living example as she plays principal flute this week in two Gershwin operas, and switches to piccolo next week in Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra.  Bring your coffee, your piccolo (if you have one), and all your questions, as we explore balancing the high life with the (slightly) lower one.
